AF GOLDEN LEAGUE 2008
Golden League, things to know
The competition is only ten years old. Since its creation in March 1998, the Golden League has been a major event on the international scene. There has been no time out during its ongoing expansion. Six meetings were held on the first edition with Oslo, Rome, Monaco, Zürich, Brussels and Berlin. In 1999, Paris was added to make it seven stages.
This year we are back with six competitions starting with Oslo, then Paris Saint-Denis, Rome, Zürich, Brussels and Berlin. Finally just like last year, the athletics main stars will wrap up their summer with the World Athletics Final held on September 13th and 14th in Stuttgart.
On a prize money standpoint, the organisers are making a little step back in 2008. The $1 Million Golden League Jackpot will be shared between the athletes capable of winning all of the six events in their own discipline. If no one completes this feat, the athletes having won 5 events will then have to share a $500,000 jackpot. The World Athletics Final will be the Jackpot winners’ final destination to finalize their supremacy displayed over the season
Ten different events are scheduled for this 2008 Golden League edition. Six of them for Men with the 100m, 400m, 1500m, 400m hurdles, 5000m, Triple Jump and Javelin Throw. Four others for Women with the 200m, 800m, 100m hurdles, High Jump.
In 2003, Maria Mutola was the only undefeated athlete on the Women’s 800m. It is Tonique Williams-Darling on the Women’s 400m and Christian Olsson on the men’s Triple Jump who shared the Jackpot in 2004. After the 2005 edition, Tatiana Lebedeva was the only one able to earn the $1 Million dollar check with a perfect six wins over the season.
In 2006, Jeremy Wariner, Asafa Powell, Sanya Richards were the unprecedented group of three athletes sharing one million dollars.
Last year, it was lady’s first ! Indeed, Yelena Isinbayeva and Sanya Richards each won half of the jackpot ( 500 000 $ )
